WAIPAHU — 'Iolani boys soccer coach Chris Lee can finally breathe a sigh of relief.

Lee won his first championship — and the Raiders won their eighth overall title — with a 5-2 win over Mililani in the JN Automotive Group/HHSAA Boys Division I State Soccer Championships last night at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Complex in front of approximately 3,500.

It was 'Iolani's first championship since 2000. Under Lee it has played in five of the past six tournament finals.

"Relieved. Excited. Very proud of our players of how they were consistent all year long," said Lee, who also won state championships as a player with 'Iolani in 1987 and 1988.

"It's just as exciting," Lee said. "As a coach you're on the sideline and it's nerve-racking. You're relying on what you taught the players."

The match-up between the top-seeded Raiders (14-0-1), the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champions, and second-seeded Trojans (14-2-2), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champions, lived up to its billing with four combined goals in the first half, and three by 'Iolani in the second half.

"It's well-deserved," Mililani coach Jeff Yamamoto said of 'Iolani's victory. "His team is awesome. If any team deserves to win for quality of play and players, it's them. We had our chances, but they took it to us today."

'Iolani's Jordon Lee, a freshman forward, scored on a pass from senior midfielder Keith Lum, who curled a pass around a Mililani defender that went right in front of the goal for Lee to put away.

"Last year I was in the stands and I was heartbroken," Lee said. "I thought, this is the year."

The Trojans tied it on a goal by junior Ryan Yoneda after the Raiders failed to clear a throw-in by senior midfielder Cory Nakagawa. The ball fell to Yoneda's feet inside the 6-yard box and he tucked it away inside the right corner in the 18th minute.

Lee scored his second goal in the 22nd minute off a cross from the right side from junior forward Nick Goo, who beat a defender and sent the ball in to Lee. Lee volleyed it in on one touch.

Mililani senior forward Aaron Yokoyama tied it again on a line-drive blast from the top of the 18-yard box that pinged off the left goalpost and into the goal in the 28th minute.

'Iolani went ahead for good on a goal by Goo after Mililani tried valiantly to clear the ball after the Raiders took three shots in rapid succession. But the Trojans couldn't stop Goo's final shot in the 46th minute.

"It's nice," said Goo, voted the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. "We've been trying for a while. It's nice to break the curse."

Yamamoto pointed to a play just before Goo's goal that he thought "changed the game," when Nakagawa was down after a tackle and the play resumed.

"Our best player was taken out and it directly led to a goal," Yamamoto said.

Goo scored again after contending with three defenders inside the 18-yard box, breaking free to the left and shooting back into the right netting in the 63rd minute.

'Iolani sophomore midfielder Patrick Shimoko scored to make it 5-2 after senior midfielder Paul Nakamoto crossed the ball in from the right side. Goo dropped it to Shimoko, who scored in the 68th minute.
