LOS ANGELES — Cal State Northridge guard Josh Jenkins was hospitalized Monday after being injured in a weekend car accident.
Jenkins was a passenger in the vehicle whose driver was killed in the single-car accident Saturday night, hours after he scored 19 points in a 77-64 victory over UC Riverside.
The senior from Albuquerque was in stable condition and will remain hospitalized for several more days, the school said in a statement Monday.
"Obviously, we're thankful that Josh is alive," coach Bobby Braswell said. "This is a big blow to our team at this point of the season, but more importantly he's alive and we pray that he will have a speedy and full recovery."
Jenkins leads the Big West in assists, averaging 6.1, and was averaging 10.2 points for the Matadors (12-10, 8-3 Big West), who have won six in a row and lead the conference standings.
Jenkins had been bothered by an ankle injury early last week, but he came off the bench Saturday night to add seven assists, four rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes.
It's the latest setback for Northridge's team this season.
Last month, guards Deon Tresvant and Dallas Rutherford, along with Braswell's son, Jeffrey, and another man were arrested on charges of commercial burglary and theft for allegedly stealing more than $6,600 in merchandise from an electronics store on New Year's Day.
