Track: UH's Kaufman receives WAC honor

Advertiser Staff

Amber Kaufman's NCAA provisional mark in the high jump Saturday earned her Western Athletic Conference Women's Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors. Kaufman, a University of Hawai'i junior and all-conference volleyball player, is in her second year on the track team.

She high jumped 5 feet, 11 1/2 inches in her first meet this season — last weekend's Northern Arizona Classic. The mark set a UH indoor record and stands as a conference best. It also tied for seventh-best jump in the nation this season.

She is one of two UH athletes to post NCAA provisional marks this indoor season, joining heptathlete Annett Wichmann.

Kaufman captured the gold medal at last year's WAC Outdoor Championships and placed fifth at NCAA Championships. She also posted a qualifying mark to participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore.

Kaufman and the Rainbow Wahine host the Terry Albritton Invitational Saturday at UH's Clarence T.C. Ching Field. It is the final tune-up before WAC Indoor Championships, Feb. 26 to 28, in Nampa, Idaho.
