Marta Matson Sanburn of Honolulu passed away peacefully at her home on Feb. 9. She was 81.
She was born on Feb. 7, 1928, in San Francisco and married business executive Willis Henry Sanburn of Springfield, Mass., in 1951. In 1965 she arrived with her young family in Honolulu, where her husband ran Honolulu Paper Co. and later developed the Waikoloa Resort on the Big Island.
Active in the community, she served on the boards of trustees at Central Union Church and at La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls.
As an interior decorator, she was proudest of her contributions to the 1989 restoration of Waikiki's historic Moana Hotel (now the Moana Surfrider).
As a society hostess, she regularly opened her Portlock home to fundraisers, community groups, members of the military and visiting students.
She is survived by her husband, Will; children, Laura, Kai, Curt and Peter; brothers, Norman and Steve; and nine grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Atherton Chapel, Central Union Church, 1660 S. Beretania St.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Joseph H. Pynchon Financial Aid Fund, in care of La Pietra-Hawaii School for Girls.
