PYEONGCHANG, South Korea — Germany's Kati Wilhelm won her second gold medal at the biathlon world championships on Wednesday, distancing her rivals in the women's individual competition.
Wilhelm handled the windy firing range well to miss only a single shot and finish in 44 minutes and 3.1 seconds, a dominant 39.5 seconds ahead of Slovakia's Teja Gregorin, who also had just one miss on the 9.5 mile course.
Tora Berger of Norway was third, coming in 46.5 seconds after Wilhelm with one missed target.
It was Wilhelm's third podium in the championships after her silver in the women's pursuit on Sunday.
Andrea Henkel of Germany was punished by her shooting, missing three targets to finish 1:51.1 behind Wilhelm in 10th place. It was Henkel's comeback after she was disqualified from the pursuit for accidentally firing a live round during practice.
Athletes in the individual contest were punished for every missed target by an extra minute added to their race time.
Elena Khrustaleva of Kazakhstan and France's Sandrine Bailly shot cleanly but finished sixth and ninth, respectively.
Individual cup leader Magadelena Neuner was left out of the race, with German coach Uwe Mussiggang instead nominating Kathrin Hitzer, who finished 79th.
Wednesday's win improved Wilhelm's lead in the overall World Cup standings with 718 points, followed by Sweden's Helena Jonsson with 655 and Magdalena Neuner, also of Germany, with 590.
Norway's Ole Einar Bjorndalen won the men's individual Tuesday to become a triple biathlon world champion after also taking gold in the men's sprint. Christop Stephan of Germany was second and Croatia's Jakov Fak won bronze.
The championship continues Thursday with the mixed relay.
