SBS Media Holdings Co., Ltd. and SBS Foundation of Seoul, Korea, have given $200,000 to the University of Hawaii to establish an expendable fund known as the Korean Law Faculty Fund at the UH Manoa William S. Richardson School of Law, according to a news release from the university.
In return, the university will hire a distinguished, tenure-track faculty member whose primary duties will include teaching courses and doing research and scholarship in Korean law, the news release said. The goal is to add a permanent Korean law scholar, although visiting professors may initially fulfill these duties.
"This wonderful, generous gift will allow the Law School to add a crucial component to our existing strength in Asian Law," Dean Aviam Soifer said in the news release. "With the addition of a Korean Law expert, we will be in a strong position to lead the United States in Asian legal studies as well as to promote understanding between our two nations," Soifer said.
