Finding new scoring sources from beyond the 3-point arc, 'Iolani rallied past Punahou, 49-45, last night in Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball action.

A crowd of about 800 at Punahou's Hemmeter Fieldhouse watched the defending champion Raiders, ranked No. 3 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, finished the ILH season at 10-2. The defending state champ Buffanblu, ranked No. 7, fell to 5-5.

'Iolani can finish no worse than second in league play and had clinched a state tournament berth after Saturday's victory over Damien.

"This is a big win for us going into the state tournament," said Raiders senior guard Kela Marciel, who hit two 3-pointers in a game last night for the first time in his four-year varsity career. "It's a good step, especially since I think Punahou is one of the best teams in the state."

Punahou used an 8-0 run to begin the second half and take a 32-24 lead, but 'Iolani answered with back-to-back 3-pointers from Brandon Ball — another unlikely source — and Marciel. Ball then drained another 3-pointer to put the Raiders ahead, 33-32, and yet another trey by forward Jarrett Arakawa made it 36-32 with 3:30 remaining in the third period.

Punahou eventually took the lead back at 37-36 after a putback by Kimo Makaula, but Arakawa responded with another 3-pointer and 'Iolani never trailed again.

Marciel, Ball and Arakawa combined for six of the Raiders' nine 3-pointers, and 'Iolani shot 60 percent from beyond the arc, compared to 0-for-9 for the Buffanblu.

"We knew they could shoot, but we had some mix-ups in our coverages and they stepped up with some big shots," Punahou coach Dan Hale said. "They made timely plays, and we didn't."

Pablo Warner broke a 39-39 tie with a traditional three-point play with 3:20 left, and the Raiders made five of six free throws down the stretch. Makaula cut it to 48-45 on a layup with 7.6 seconds remaining, but Warner made the first of two free throws one second later to effectively seal the victory.

Kainoa Chu led 'Iolani with a game-high 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Warner added 12 points.

Makaula led the Buffanblu with 12 points, and fellow post Manti Te'o — in only his second game of the season — contributed three points, eight rebounds and three steals.
