Roderick Flemings had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team to a 73-69 road victory over Fresno State tonight.
The game was nationally televised on ESPN2 from the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.
The victory was the second for Hawai'i over the Bulldogs this month. The Rainbow Warriors improved to 13-12 overall and moved into sole possession of sixth place in the Western Athletic Conference at 5-8.
Fresno State dropped to 10-17, and is in ninth place in the nine-team WAC at 2-10.
Unlike the first meeting between the teams two weeks ago in Honolulu — where Hawai'i raced to a 34-10 lead en route to a 69-43 victory — this one was close from start to finish.
The lead changed eight times in the first half, and neither team led by more than six. Hawai'i had a 28-22 lead with 5:13 remaining, but the score was tied at 32 at intermission.
The score was tied for the last time at 43 with 11:27 remaining in the second half.
Hawai'i then took a 48-43 lead and stayed in front the rest of the way. But the 'Bows could never pull away from the Bulldogs, and the lead was never greater than six.
Fresno State got as close as 65-64 on a dunk by Sylvester Seay with 1:17 remaining, but the 'Bows responded with back-to-back layups by Bill Amis and Brandon Adams to put it away.
The 'Bows went 0 for 4 from 3-point range, marking the second consecutive game that they did not make a 3-pointer. Prior to the last two games, Hawai'i had made at least one 3-pointer in 135 consecutive games.
Amis added 12 points, and Adams scored 11 for Hawai'i. Kareem Nitoto contributed 10 points and five assists, and Hiram Thompson had eight points and six assists.
Seay led the Bulldogs with 22 points and nine rebounds.
