SBS Media Holdings Co., Ltd. and SBS Foundation of Seoul, Korea, have given $200,000 to the University of Hawai'i to establish an expendable fund known as the Korean Law Faculty Fund at the UH-Manoa William S. Richardson School of Law.

In return, the university will hire a distinguished, tenure-track faculty member whose primary duties will include teaching courses and doing research and scholarship in Korean law, according to UH. The goal is to add a permanent Korean law scholar, although visiting professors may initially fulfill these duties.

"With the addition of a Korean law expert, we will be in a strong position to lead the United States in Asian legal studies as well as to promote understanding between our two nations," dean Aviam Soifer said.

Established in 1990, SBS is the only private nationwide terrestrial broadcasting company in Korea. It is one of three terrestrial TV and radio broadcasting stations with a nationwide network, and syndicates programs to local, private stations. SBS Media Holdings is a Korea-based holding company engaged in the managing of SBS. On Feb. 29, 2008, the company was established through the spinoff of the investment division of SBS.
