Lleyton Hewitt upset third-seed James Blake, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4, at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championship last night in Memphis, Tenn.

Top-seeded Andy Roddick took care of his serve in the first set, then ousted defending tournament champion Steve Darcis of Belgium, 7-6 (1), 6-2, in the day's last match.

"Steve was making good shots early in the match, but I was trying to keep pressure on him, force him to keep making shots — and when he got into a (service) break situation he started to not make them," Roddick said.

"The last couple of years I've inched probably the wrong way (in terms of conditioning) and I'm getting back to where I need to be. I've played well so far this year, but don't have a win to show for it yet."

Earlier, the top-seeded Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark rolled into the quarterfinals of the women's draw with a 6-1, 7-6 (1) victory over Severine Bremond of France. And the 18-year-old is looking to reverse a pattern from her first three trips to this event.

Wozniacki has been eliminated by the eventual Memphis champion three straight years — Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden in 2006, and Americans Venus Williams in 2007 and Lindsey Davenport last year. She has yet to get past the quarterfinals in this event.

WILLIAMS SISTERS REACH DUBAI QUARTERFINALS

Serena and Venus Williams remained on track to meet in the semifinals but Jelena Jankovic was beaten in the third round of the Dubai Championships yesterday at Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Top-seeded Serena beat Zheng Jie of China, 6-4, 6-2, while sixth-seeded Venus put away Alize Cornet of France, 6-3, 6-2.

Third-seeded Jankovic, the runner-up in 2005 and a semifinalist the last two years, lost her first match with Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, 6-2, 7-5.

COLTS' HEYDEN AGREES TO 5 YEARS, $43 MILLION

Cornerback Kelvin Hayden agreed to a five-year deal worth $43 million last night, hours before the Colts were prepared to use the franchise tag to prevent him from hitting the free-agent market, The Indianapolis Star reported on its Web site.

"Needless to say, Kelvin is very happy," Fletcher Smith, Hayden's agent, told the Star. "The (contract) just made a lot of sense for us."

Hayden intercepted three passes each of the past two seasons.

SMELL OF POT IN CAR LED TO BILLS' LYNCH ARREST

Officers who arrested Buffalo Bills running back Marshawn Lynch last week for possessing a loaded gun decided to search him after noticing the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle he occupied, police said yesterday.

Lynch and two other men were sitting in a parked Mercedes Benz with no license plates and dark, tinted windows on Feb. 11 in Culver City, Calif., when officers approached to investigate if the car was stolen, said police Capt. Dave Tankenson.

The officers smelled marijuana and searched the car and its occupants, finding four marijuana cigarettes and an unregistered .9mm pistol, Tankenson said. Officers were unsure if the drugs belonged to Lynch.

Lynch's attorney, Gerald Schwartzbach, said the running back was not booked on any drug violations. He said he had not seen a copy of the police report and would not comment further.

RAIDERS' PUNTER LECHLER AGREES TO FOUR-YEAR DEAL

All-Pro punter Shane Lechler agreed to a four-year contract yesterday to stay with the Oakland Raiders, allowing the club to avoid a potentially tough choice in free agency.

Lechler could have become an unrestricted free agent next week after being chosen to the AFC's Pro Bowl team for the fourth time in his nine-year career. The Raiders didn't disclose financial terms of the deal, but it's believed to make Lechler the highest-paid punter in NFL history.

"This contract is the greatest ever given to a punter in the history of the National Football League," Raiders senior executive John Herrera told The Associated Press.

RAVENS PUT FRANCHISE TAG ON LINEBACKER SUGGS

The Baltimore Ravens used the franchise tag on Pro Bowl outside linebacker Terrell Suggs for the second consecutive year yesterday, a transaction that costs the team $10.2 million against the 2009 salary cap.

A three-time Pro Bowl selection who led the team with eight sacks while recording a career-high 102 tackles last season, Suggs was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. Now, he's under contract for at least one more year after playing last season under an $8.5 million franchise tag.
