MLB: Phillies dressed for the occasion

By Jim Salisbury
The Philadelphia Inquirer

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Brett Myers turned to Cole Hamels and asked, "Hey, can you zip me up?"

Hamels told Myers he looked ready for a "redneck wedding."

The scene inside the Phillies' clubhouse on Friday afternoon was unusual, but provided a few good laughs and ultimately a cool photograph.

Greg Casterioto, the Phillies' director of media relations, wanted the returning members of last year's championship team to pose for a picture with the World Series trophy.

He wanted it done on the emerald green grass of Bright House Field. And he wanted everyone to wear black tuxedos.

Earlier this week, manager Charlie Manuel and 28 players and coaches were fitted for tuxedos. After Friday's workout, the team donned the formal wear — complete with red bow tie, red vest and sunglasses — and posed in left field with the trophy.

There were a few hitches. Hamels briefly interrupted the shot with a sneeze, and Matt Stairs dropped his chewing gum. After what those two guys did in the postseason, both were quickly forgiven.

"I got married in a baseball uniform, so that's the first time I've been in a tux since my prom — Fargo (N.D.), South High School, 1991," Chris Coste said. "Fantastic idea. I want a copy of the picture."

The photo, shot by team photographer Miles Kennedy, will be used on the cover of Phillies Magazine, which will be sold at Citizens Bank Park in April. To maintain exclusivity, the Phillies did not permit other photographers to join the shoot of the whole team.

The entire photo shoot took about 15 minutes, ending shortly after one player good-naturedly moaned, "Uncle." It was supposed to start at 2 p.m., but a certain member of the team's hierarchy was late.

"What the hell?" one player said in his best Manuel imitation as the late party — Manuel — ambled out to the photo shoot at 2:12 p.m.

"Let's go, son," another player quipped in his best Manuel voice.

It was 54 degrees on the ballpark scoreboard, so it could have been a little warmer. Still, the sun was shining and everyone had fun with it.

Clay Condrey hadn't been in a tux since "Nov. 12, 2005, the day I got married," he said.

Pitching coach Rich Dubee had him beat.

"Thirty years and two days ago — my wedding," he said.

The best laughs came in the clubhouse, as players primped like groomsmen before a wedding.

Ryan Madson helped Myers fasten his bow tie, but Myers wasn't impressed with his look.

"Can't polish a turd," he said with a shrug.

Chase Utley hilariously walked through the room with high-waters. He eventually adjusted his suspenders and was ready to go.

Several players punctuated their garb with red socks. Others wore white. Stairs didn't wear any. (Again, forgiven.)

Jimmy Rollins was the only player not to wear the shoes that came with the tux. He wore a pair of shiny black Nike Air Force 1 sneakers, and they matched the attire perfectly.

"It was a lot of fun," Coste said. "The only thing that would have made it better is if we had our rings on."

The Phillies will get those on April 8.

They should be easier to put on than tuxedos.
