'Iolani girls capture state basketball berth

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

Despite losing five veteran starters to graduation, 'Iolani earned a return trip to the Hawaiian Airlines Girls Basketball State Championships last night after holding off Kamehameha, 51-47.

A home crowd of about 450 watched the Raiders, ranked No. 6 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, ride an 11-0 fourth period run en route to finishing 9-5 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play. Kamehameha, ranked No. 9, ends its season at 5-7.

'Iolani receives the ILH's second state tournament berth and will begin action in Tuesday's first round. The Raiders finished second in last year's state tourney, relying largely on veteran starters Jamie Smith, Chanel Hirata, Dayna Jandoc, Kylie Ahlo and Raechelle Takara.

"At the beginning of this season, we were big underdogs, and we had our ups and downs," said junior guard Lori Yamashita, a returnee who scored 13 points last night. "But we just kept pushing through and we've come together. This week we wanted to play our best for the seniors."

Kamehameha took a 41-39 lead on Pomaikai Kalakau's layup with 5:56 remaining, but sophomore Lahela Usui swished a 3-pointer two minutes later to start 'Iolani on an 11-0 run that put the Raiders up, 50-41, after Yamashita's two free throws with 1:32 left.

But 'Iolani missed three straight free throws in the next 50 seconds, leaving the door open for a Warriors comeback.

Lindsey Wong cut it to 50-47 on a layup with 37 seconds remaining, but Yamashita sank a free throw 20 seconds later and Kamehameha could not convert on its final possession.

"We wanted to attack the basket (in the fourth period), but we ended up settling for outside shots," Warriors coach Clay Cockett said.

Raiders starting center Mahina Haina had 11 rebounds in the first half but picked up her fourth foul with 3:54 left in the third quarter and was sent to the bench. She returned later in the fourth period and had two points, three rebounds and a crucial block down the stretch.

"One of the keys for us was defense and rebounding, and Mahina was a huge factor," said Marlene Zeug, 'Iolani's first-year coach. "She gives us a big presence underneath and grabbed a lot of boards."

Freshman guard Kylie Maeda scored 16 points to lead the Raiders and Usui added 10 points.

Wong led Kamehameha with 16 points and Pua Furtado added 10 points.
