Track: Jelks, Williams sweep 60-meter races for US

Associated Press

ATHENS, Greece — Mark Jelks and Angela Williams swept the 60-meter races for the United States at the Athens 2009 indoor meet Wednesday.

In the men's race, Jelks narrowly edged Britain's Simeon Williamson, with both athletes timed at 6.57 seconds. Williams won the women's race in a personal season-best 7.15 seconds, pulling away from Tahesia Harrigan of the British Virgin Islands.

Williams, the reigning world indoor champion in the event, was a member of the 4x100 U.S. relay teams at the last two Olympics. Both times, the team was disqualified because of faulty baton exchanges.

Dexter Faulk of the United States won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.57 seconds Wednesday, holding off Britain's Andy Turner and Gregory Sedoc of the Netherlands.

Ivan Ukhov of Russia jumped a world-leading 2.40 meters in the men's high jump, and Haron Keitani of Kenya nearly set the best time of the season in the men's 1500 meters, winning in 3 minutes, 34.83 seconds.

Ukhov's jump was the fourth-best all-time. He failed to break Javier Sotomayor's record of 2.43 meters, making only one effort at 2.44.
