MLB: Indians closer Kerry Wood slowed by sore back

Associated Press

GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Indians closer Kerry Wood hasn't thrown off a mound since last weekend because of a sore back, and Cleveland manager Eric Wedge says the team will give him a few more days of rest before he pitches again.

Wedge revealed Wood's back problem for the first time following Cleveland's 10-7 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday.

Wood, who signed a two-year, $20.5 million contract in December, has a long history of injury problems. He went on the disabled list 12 times in 11 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, and arm problems forced him to convert from starter to reliever.

Wedge said the 31-year-old right-hander has had back problems in previous springs and the club wants to take every precaution to make sure he's 100 percent.
