A female bicyclist was in critical condition today, and two boys in tow behind the bicycle also were injured after they were struck by a vehicle on Kamehameha Highway in the Pupukea area, police and fire officials said.

One boy suffered broken bones and the other has cuts and abrasions, said fire Capt. Robert Main.

Both were in serious condition, police said, describing them as 3 and 5 years old.

All were taken to The Queen's Medical Center.

The collision occurred in front of 59-499 Ke Waena Road at 8:04 a.m.

Main said the bicyclist was going toward Waialua on Kamehameha Highway with the boys behind her bicycle, seated in a trailer.

They were struck by a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

Police initially closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions, then later contra-flowed traffic into the mauka lane at Ke Waena Road.

Honolulu police reopened Kamehameha Highway just before noon.
