Two people escaped serious injury when the helicopter they were aboard made a "hard landing" this morning in mountainous terrain behind Kalani High School.

Paramedics treated the pilot for minor injuries, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city's emergency services department.

The pilot, who is in his 50s or 60s, did not need to be taken to a hospital, Cheplic said.

The other person aboard was uninjured, Cheplic said.

Fire Department Spokesman Terry Seelig said the department was notified of the incident about 10:40 a.m. Rescue crews and the department's helicopter were sent to the area, located along the Wiliwili Nui Trail, Seelig said.

One of the occupants of the helicopter was airlifted by the Fire Department helicopter, Seelig said.

"There's damage to the helicopter," he said. "I'm not sure how severe but it remains up the mountain."
