Bicyclist dies after head-on collision

A 50-year-old man died from injuries he sustained after his bicycle collided head-on with a car on Kamehameha Highway near the Turtle Bay Resort Saturday night, police said.

He was the fourth fatality of the year.

The other three, all of which occurred separately on New Year's Day, comprised a single-vehicle rollover accident in Kalihi, and motorcycle accidents in which the cyclists failed to negotiate sharp curves in the road. Both motorcycle accidents were in Waipahu.

Police traffic investigators said Saturday's North Shore victim was riding a black mountain bike and traveling north in the south-bound lane when he collided with a 1993 Buick Century head-on at about 7 p.m.

The bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center where he died at around 9:30 p.m. Neither the Buick's driver, 63, nor his female passenger, 64, was injured.

Saturday's death came after a plea by Honolulu police Friday to be more careful in the wake of the three New Year's Day fatalities. There were two traffic deaths in the first four days of 2008.
