Advertiser Staff and News Services
Two Borders Express stores on Maui are slated to close Jan. 24.
The stores at Lahaina Cannery Mall and Whalers Village are sites of former Waldenbooks stores converted to the Borders brand in 2004. Borders and Waldenbooks had been jointly owned since 1992, though Borders previously closed underperforming Waldenbooks stores and converted the others to Borders Express.
Bonnie Schmick, a spokeswoman for Michigan-based Borders Group, said no other Borders stores in Hawai'i are slated for closure.
UH INSTALLING PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM
The University of Hawai'i Shidler School of Business has begun installing a 4.5-kilowatt photovoltaic panel system that will provide enough electricity each day to operate courtyard lights for an entire night.
The new system, which is being installed on top of one of the business school's buildings, includes a Web-based monitoring system that will allow students, faculty and the public to monitor the efficiency of the system.
The system, which will generate an estimated 24 kilowatts of power each day, has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 9,323 pounds each year.
"We are committed to alternative energy solutions to meet the University of Hawai'i's overall goal of generating 25 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2010," said V. Vance Roley, the school's dean.
The $50,000 system was donated by Hawai'i real estate investor and entrepreneur Jay Shidler.
WORKSHOP SET ON CENSUS DATA
State and federal officials will hold a free workshop Jan. 27 called "Navigating the Census Bureau's 2007 American Community Survey Data."
The event, co-sponsored by the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism, and the Census Bureau's Los Angeles Regional Office, will be held at the Keoni Ana Building, 1177 Alakea St. There will be two sessions, one starting at 8:30 a.m. and the other starting at 12:30 p.m.
Morgan Walls-Dines, Census Bureau information specialist from the L.A. Regional Office of the Census Bureau, will conduct the workshop. The ongoing, American Community Survey replaces the census long-form used in previous 10-year censuses to obtain detailed household information. It was developed in response to the need for economic, social, demographic and housing data on a more frequent basis.

$7,325 RAISED FOR CANCER FOUNDATION
The employees of Anthology Marketing Group raised $7,325 for the Hawai'i Children's Cancer Foundation in its annual Yule Store fundraising drive.
For more than 30 years the Yule Store has raised money for local charitable organizations through silent auctions. Each year, employees nominate and then vote on the year's beneficiary. This year, more than 400 items donated by staff, clients, vendors and media partners were auctioned.
"We were thrilled to learn that Anthology Marketing Group chose Hawai'i Children's Cancer Foundation as its beneficiary for their annual silent auction," said Kendis Teho, president-elect of Hawai'i Children's Cancer Foundation. "It is heartwarming to see such a group of passionate individuals truly embracing the holiday spirit of giving."
