Deaths at Kauai waterfalls ruled accidental

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The two men found dead at the base of two Kaua'i waterfalls on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 both died of injuries sustained from falls, Kaua'i police announced Tuesday.

"Examination of the scene and location of the bodies and injuries revealed no reason to believe there was any foul play," Kaua'i Assistant Police Chief Roy Asher said in an e-mail response to questions about the two deaths.

The police investigation included retracing the two men's activities before they were last seen, he said.

Asher confirmed the bodies were found by people who didn't know the men and who happened upon their bodies.

Clayton Carlson, 25, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., was found at the bottom of a waterfall near 'Anini Stream on Dec. 31.

Troy Paul Crawford, 40, of Kapa'a, was found at the base of Wailua Falls the next day.

Families of the men have been contacted, but no further details will be released to protect their privacy, Asher said.

"It's unfortunate that people continue to venture out to these types of locations," Asher said and urged that the public "please heed warning signs of the dangers that certain locations present."
