WAHIAWA
Tree removal scheduled off H-2 may slow traffic

The right lanes in both directions of H-2 Freeway between Higgins Road and Leilehua Golf Course Road may be closed from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. daily through Friday.

The state Department of Transportation will be clearing about 340 trees lining the eastern end of the runway at Wheeler Army Airfield in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration regulations. The trees are 50 feet to 70 feet high and pose a hazard to approaching aircraft, DOT officials said.

Trees scheduled for removal are considered invasive and include ironwood, albizzia, banyan and African tulip. Low-lying shrubs such as native hibiscus will be planted after the trees are removed. The Outdoor Circle has been consulted.

The project is expected to be completed at the end of February.
