The Maui News

LAHAINA - A rally and ceremony to mark the anniversary of the overthrow of the Hawaiian kingdom will be held Saturday at the Lahaina Civic Center in conjunction with a rally and march at Iolani Palace on Oahu, The Maui News reported today.

E Onipaa Kakou, Let Us All Be Steadfast" is aimed at commemorating Queen Lili'uokalani while providing information about services and programs available to assist Native Hawaiians, organizers said. It will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

It also will include information on the events of Jan. 17, 1893, when business and plantation owners calling themselves the Committee of Safety were supported by the United States minister to Hawaii in deposing Lili'uokalani.

Organizers of E Onipaa Kakou said the program is intended to be educational and informative, seeking to support the views of all Hawaiians in seeking a fair and free political process for re-establishing rights of Native Hawaiians.

The program will include a formal protocol at 9 a.m., with participants asked to wear red in alliance with the Honolulu rally.

The daylong event will also have music, food and informational displays, including details on scholarships available at Maui Community College. Performers will include George Kahumoku Jr., Richard Ho'opi'i, the Kahaialii ohana, the Kekona ohana, Mele Pono, Dezman, Zacc Kekona, the Unifiers and Hewahewa.

Tickets are $10 in advance at Bounty Music and Lahaina Music, or $15 at the gate. Children under 10 will be admitted free. Information is available at (808) 205-1034.
