City to close beaches, open shelters

Advertiser Staff

The city will close all Leeward O'ahu and North Shore beaches tomorrow because of strong winds and high surf that are expected to hit the island.

Bellows and Waimanalo Bay Beach Park on Windward O'ahu also will be closed as a precaution against breaking tree limbs.

Mayor Mufi Hannemann said Red Cross shelters will be open at Wai'anae District Park, Kane'ohe District Park, Waialua District Park and Waimanalo District Park. The American Red Cross reminds residents that these shelters will be for emergency refuge and will have only minimal amenities.

Those going to a shelter must bring non-perishable food, water, clothing, bedding, medications, and other personal items. Family pets are not allowed, although service animals that assist the disabled will be permitted in the shelters.

Hannemann said city crews will be going to the closed beaches tomorrow morning at 9 to assist homeless campers. He said the city will provide evacuation shuttles to those who need transportation assistance.
