'Iolani withstood three Kamehameha shot attempts in the final five seconds last night to hold off the Warriors, 44-42, in a thrilling Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys basketball showdown.

A home crowd of about 600 watched the Raiders, ranked No. 2 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, improve to 3-0 in the ILH. The No. 1-ranked Warriors fell to 2-1.

'Iolani jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never trailed, but the Raiders felt Kamehameha breathing down their neck the entire game, including the final 22 seconds when the Warriors cut a 44-38 lead to 44-42 after baskets by Chaz Bajet and Micah Christenson.

"They're definitely athletic and they always try hard," said 'Iolani senior forward Pablo Warner, who finished with a team-high 13 points. "We knew they're going to play physical all the time."

And that was without starting power forward Auwae DeRego, Kamehameha's primary enforcer inside who was out with a sprained ankle and broken nose. Warriors coach Jesse Nakanishi said he hopes DeRego can return by Tuesday.

Still, Kamehameha was able to hang tough and battle back despite deficits of 25-18 at halftime and 40-29 after three periods. The Raiders did not score in the fourth quarter until 1:11 remaining, on Trevyn Tulonghari's short jumper from the right baseline to make it 42-36. Bajet answered with a driving layup, but 'Iolani came right back with Warner's layup to put the Raiders ahead 44-38 with 36 seconds left.

Bajet then scored on another short banker 14 seconds later, and the Warriors capitalized on a turnover with Christenson's putback to cut it to 44-42 with 10 ticks remaining.

Tulonghari was fouled on the ensuing possession with 0:08.6 showing on the clock, but he missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and Pi'i Minns grabbed the rebound. He pushed the ball up the floor and passed it to the right corner for Shane Matayoshi, whose 3-point attempt rimmed out.

A tip-in fell short and Christenson's putback hit the front of the rim as time expired.

"All I have to say about this game is that this loss is on me," Nakanishi said. "I've got to do a better job of coaching."

Kamehameha stayed close despite making only 6 of 14 free throws, mainly by forcing several turnovers via an intense ball-pressure defense.

"Our offense turned it over more than 20 times, so to still win against a quality Kamehameha team when our offense is having a bad night, you gotta praise our defense," 'Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said. "We got a little out of our game on offense (in the fourth quarter), and we got tentative. Our game is more vertical, and if we can't get into that, we have a hard time."

Christenson, a sophomore forward, scored a game-high 15 points to lead the Warriors, but was held to three points on one field goal and a free throw in the second half. Minns, a high-scoring guard, was limited to five points.
