Kalahikiola Congregational Church of Kohala, which suffered nearly $1.1 million dollars in damage in the 2006 Big Island earthquake, is rebuilding its historic building.

Delayed by historic landmark issues, insurance problems and the search for a architect and contractor, demolition for the the church built in 1855 began in September and is expected to take another month.

Rebuilding is estimated to take about 10 months, said its senior minister, the Rev. George Baybrook. The bell tower and roof were not destroyed, but both must be braced to enable the removal of all the old stone church walls, he noted. Glenn Mason Inc. of Honolulu was picked as architect and Kikiaola Construction Co. of Kaua'i is the contractor.
