In a typical track meet between O'ahu Interscholastic Association rivals, Radford had the finishing kick last night to surge past visiting Mililani, 65-57, in OIA Red Conference boys basketball action.

The Rams improved to 3-0 in the OIA Red Western Division, while the Trojans fell to 2-1.

"Every year we play them, it's like that — run and gun," said Radford guard Quentin Kimura, who finished with a game-high 23 points. "But that's how we like to play."

With each team going at least 10 players deep, the game had a fast pace from the get-go and the lead changed hands over a dozen times. Mililani took a 22-16 lead in the first period on Daniel Paglinawan's 3-pointer with 51 seconds remaining, but Radford answered with a 3 by JB Fontenot to cut it to 22-19 entering the second.

The teams traded baskets again in the second period until Taz Stevenson gave the Trojans a 30-29 lead on a 10-foot banker with 44 seconds left.

Mililani opened the lead to 39-33 midway through the third quarter, but the Rams responded with a 13-3 run to go up, 46-42, with 48 seconds remaining. The Trojans then closed to 46-44 after Reginald Griffin's steal and layup as time expired.

The game was tied 55-55 with under three minutes left, until Derrell Lee gave Radford the lead for good with two free throws at the 2:14 mark. Joash Pagilinan then made a steal and layup four seconds later, and a free throw throw by Jared Victorino made it 60-55 with 1:35 remaining.

Nick Demusis cut it to 60-57 on a fast break slam dunk with 58 seconds left, but that was as close as Mililani would get as the Rams sank five free throws down the stretch to seal it.

"That's what we tell our guys: if we can stay close till the fourth quarter, then our strength and conditioning will kick in," said Radford coach Wayne Keys. "We like to run and push the ball up the floor, but the whole thing is, we work a lot in the weight room and with our conditioning."

Trojans first-year coach Ed Gonzales said his team also prefers an up-tempo game, but many of the Mililani players are still adjusting to the varsity pace.

"We're a junior-heavy team, with only three returnees," said Gonzales, who was the Trojans' JV coach last year. "We're trying to get them to understand that this is is a different level, the players are more mature and the game is faster."

Lee added 17 points for the Rams. Reid Pangelinan led Mililani with 12 points and Griffin added 10 points.
