Roosevelt girls hold off McKinley, 71-69

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

After watching a 20-point lead disintegrate in the third period and then a seven-point lead cut to one with 10 second remaining, Roosevelt finally held off visiting McKinley, 71-69, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball action last night.

The Rough Riders, who lost to Farrington, 75-44, on Tuesday, improved to 4-1 in the OIA's Red Conference Eastern Division. McKinley fell to 4-1.

"It feels good," said Roosevelt forward Tasia Kamakawiwo'ole, who finished with a game-high 21 points last night. "We felt a lot of pressure, we felt like we had the whole weight on our shoulders."

The pressure did not disappear until Joshy Noga sank a free throw with 0.2 seconds left, giving the Rough Riders a 71-69 lead. The Tigers had a half-court attempt almost bank in after the buzzer, but it would not have counted since only a tip-in (according to the rulebook) would have been allowed within the time remaining.

Early on, it did not look like the game would come down to the final seconds, as Roosevelt built a 35-15 lead midway through the second period behind sharp shooting and transition baskets. But McKinley closed it to 38-29 by halftime, and eventually tied it at 38-38 on Ashley Gravely's three-point play with 5:43 left in the third quarter.

"Give credit to McKinley — they're tough and scrappy," said Rough Riders coach Clint Chikamori. "They just wouldn't go away."

That was true even after Roosevelt had built the lead back up to 51-40 late in the third period. Jackie Tihano swished a 3-pointer to cut it to 51-43 entering the fourth, and the Tigers eventually closed it to 60-58 on two free throws by Gravely with 3:33 remaining.

But the Rough Riders went up again by seven, 70-63, on Cierra Kapea's two free throws with 35 seconds left.

Tatiana Dinson then scored on a three-point play to cut it to 70-66 with 18 ticks remaining, and — after a held ball gave McKinley possession — Tihano drained another 3-pointer from the left corner to make it 70-69 with 0:10.4 showing on the clock.

Roosevelt turned it over on a traveling violation with five seconds left, but the Tigers missed a 10-foot runner in the lane and Noga grabbed the rebound.
