Sure, the Ala Wai Challenge is about canoe racing, Hawaiian culture, Makahiki games and supporting the Waikiki Community Center. But it's also about food. The key vendor this year is Da Spot, the tiny takeout restaurant on Pumehana Street in Mo'ili'ili known for Mediterranean dishes, such as vegetarian curry, lamb shanks, Egyptian chicken with cardamom, cumin and herbs — and owner Ahmad Ramadan's famous baklava. Here's a chance to experience the food and enjoy a free, family-friendly outing. 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at the Ala Wai Neighborhood Park and Clubhouse. Information: 923-1802, ext. 109.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
CELEBRATE THE WAY ASIANS DO
The New Year, whether calculated by the Julian or lunar calendars, is generally Asia's most festive holiday. Calvary Church and Preschool Family Camp is recognizing this with a special pan-Asian fundraiser, "An Asian New Year's Dinner," 6-8 p.m. Friday at 45-435 Aumoku St., Kane'ohe. On the menu: Chinese chicken salad, shoyu chicken, Korean fried chicken, Okinawan braised pork, fried noodles, gau (Chinese rice flour cake), almond floats and, of course, steamed rice.
Tickets are $12 for 11 and older, $7 for those 5 to 10 and free for those younger than 5. For directions, call 247-2733. Reservations: Laura Fink, 941-1722, or laurafink@hawaii.rr.com.
