Fifteen Waipi'o Acres residents are homeless after a fire destroyed their Waimakua Drive home this afternoon.
All eight people at home at the time of the fire managed to safely escape. A woman was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and a minor burn to her arm, but declined further treatment. Four dogs and two cats were also safely evacuated.
Damage to the structure and its contents is estimated at $450,000.
In all, fifteen people — 11 adults and four children — resided at the house; two other people were also staying there, according to the fire department. The Red Cross is helping to find temporary housing for the displaced residents.
According to Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig, firefighters from Mililani responded to the initial call at 3:09 p.m. and found heavy smoke billowing from the single-story, seven-bedroom home. Two other companies were called and it took 40 firefighters, five engines and two ladder trucks to get the fire under control.
The back of the house collapsed as a result of the fire, but neighboring homes were not affected.
An investigation is under way to determine the cause of the blaze.
