Maui recorded its first traffic death of the year when a 21-year-old motorcyclist was killed yesterday in a collision on Hana Highway.

Police said Jonathan Davis, of Kahului, was driving a 2001 Suzuki GSX-R600 east on the highway at 6:50 a.m. when a 2006 Jeep Commander turned in front of him from the opposite lane in an attempt to turn left onto Wakea Avenue.

Davis, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene of the collision. The 45-year-old woman who was driving the Jeep was not injured.
