Today is the deadline for nominations for our gentle Valentine's Makeover. Know someone who deserves a day of pampering? Haircut, color, facial, massage, makeup? Let us know!
Nominate a deserving man or woman in your life for The Advertiser's Valentine's Day makeover. We have partnered with salons and day spas to offer a day of relaxation, renewal and indulgence to three deserving O'ahu folks. We'll get them ready for a big night out and the rest is up to you.
Your nominee must be available to spend most of the day on Feb. 14 being pampered and prettied-up. Send nominations to: paularath@aol.com.
STUDENT JEWELRY DESIGNS DISPLAYED
Kapi'olani Community College students from Carol Sakihara's fall 2008 small-scale sculpture class are showing their work at elle Couture Jewellers' new store at 909 Kapi'olani Blvd. The show will be up from tomorrow through Thursday.
TOES ON THE NOSE GETS SHAGGED
Surf brand Toes on the Nose has partnered with Southern California artist Shag to release limited-edition men's contemporary apparel for spring 2009. Showcasing Shag's distinctive mid-century-style illustrations of tikis, tropical drinks, volcanoes and characters, some pieces from the special edition Shag Collection have just arrived in Moonbow Tropics in the Westin Moana Hotel.
Taking inspiration from vintage aloha shirts and classic cocktails, Shag, aka Josh Agle, said, "I used real cocktails and invented some of my own in the design. Of course the most fun part was product testing."
Moonbow Tropics is selling four styles of the Shag shirts, in polyester/rayon and 100 percent cotton, for $110.
ON OUR RADAR | LUCKY CHINA
No bulls allowed in the china shop, but maybe a few oxen, since this is the year of the ox?
We usually think of tea as the drink of choice in China. However, espresso is rapidly gaining in popularity. Hence Shanghai Tang's bone china espresso cups featuring numbers that are commonly associated with good fortune in Chinese culture:
5: The five blessings of longevity, wealth, health, love of virtue, natural death
6: Prosperity
8: The most auspicious number, as it rhymes with the Mandarin word for prosperity and wealth
9: Longevity
The cups are arriving in the Ala Moana Shanghai Tang store just in time for the Chinese New Year, selling for $35 each.
