Former pro soccer player Lalas headlines free clinic

 •  Kid rocks when it comes to high-flying on 4 wheels

Former professional soccer player Alexi Lalas will lead a free youth soccer clinic tomorrow at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

The clinic is free and open to kids ages 5 to 17. Registration will be at 8:45 a.m. at field No. 5. The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will receive an adidas jersey, water bottle and sports pack.

Lalas played for New England, New York, Kansas City and Los Angeles in the MLS and also played in Italy's Series A league.

YOUTH FLAG FOOTBALL

The Kama'aina Kids Youth Flag Football League for boys and girls ages 6 to 12 is accepting registration. The cost is $95 per player.

Games will be played Sundays at Ala Puumalu Community Park in Salt Lake, starting Feb. 15 and ending April 5.

Free players and coaches clinics will be conducted by Elite Sports Academy Staff Sunday. For information, go to www.elitesportshawaii.com/flag_football.

AOKI RECEIVES HONOR

Ronald Aoki of the Island Ladies softball team in Mililani was named the 2008 Liberty Mutual Responsible Coaching Award winner from Hawai'i, an honor for men and women who emphasize sportsmanship and character building in their approach to mentoring children.

Aoki is one of 44 winners out of nearly 1,100 coaches across the nation nominated for the award.

The award, which includes $250 to help offset the cost of running a team, comes from the Liberty Mutual Responsible Sports program, an online community found at www.ResponsibleSports.com that helps coaches and parents maximize the positive role they play in young athletes' lives, through helpful blogs, videos, and curriculum.

GOTO TAKES TITLE

University of Hawai'i student Ken Goto won the overall title and was named most valuable player at the All Japan Double Mini-Trampoline Championships in Kaminoyama City, Japan

Goto won the perpetual trophy, which must stay in Japan and will be kept at Shoshi High School in Fukushima, where Goto graduated in 2008.

Goto also is a member of Hawaii Academy's elite and collegiate trampoline teams. When not training he also serves as an academy coach, judge, and instructor.
