Mililani boys top Campbell, 77-66

By Kalani Takase
Advertiser Staff Writer

MILILANI — Nick DeMusis led all scorers with 19 points to lift Mililani over previous unbeaten Campbell, 77-66, last night.

A crowd of about 400 saw Mililani improve to 5-1 in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red West Division. Campbell fell to 5-1. The two are tied atop the Red West standings with Radford, which defeated Kapolei last night.

Campbell coach Laricke Jackson lamented his team's 14-of-21 shooting from the free-throw line, including 2 of 6 in the fourth period.

"Mililani played tough. It was exactly how we thought it would be: fast-paced, get up the floor. We just didn't hit free throws down the stretch when we needed to," Jackson said.

The Trojans are loaded with juniors, but two key players — DeMusis and center Reid Pangelinan — are seniors.

"We're a young team and I think this was a good win for us," Mililani coach Ed Gonzales said.

The Trojans opened the game with a 12-0 run, but the Sabers tied it 19-19 on Zachery Manuel's fastbreak layup late in the first quarter.

Mililani led 42-28 at halftime, but Campbell hit 6 of its 10 3-pointers in the third quarter and pulled within one on Timothy Hurd's 3-pointer with 1:20 left in the period.

"Campbell is a good team, they have good shooters and we knew we had to shut down their shooters," DeMusis said.

Mililani opened the fourth quarter on an 8-2 run and scored the final seven points of the game to seal the win.

DeMusis and Pangelinan scored 12 points apiece in the second half.

Kristian Manuel led Campbell with 15 points and Patrick Ward had 14.
