Two days after a new U.S. President was inaugurated, the Wai'anae High School girls soccer team made its own bit of history.
The Seariders did all of their scoring in the first half, then held on for a 4-3 win over Radford in last night's semifinals of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Division Tournament at Kailua High School.
The Seariders (7-1-2), the top seed out of the West, will play East No. 1 Kailua (9-0-0) in tomorrow's championship game at Roosevelt. By winning last night, both teams also earned berths to the state Division II tournament.
"This is how Barack (Obama) made president," said Wai'anae goalkeeper Leahi Panui, who made several big saves in the second half. "This is the first time we're going to the big game. We're making history."
West No. 3 Radford (4-3-4) cut a 4-1 halftime deficit to 4-3 in the 77th minute after Kelsey Pacpaco's penalty kick. A minute later, a pass from midfield was sent up the field with a Wai'anae defender and Radford's Kelsey Bonds running onto the ball. But Panui came out to the top of the 18-yard box to make the save. In the 79th minute, Radford was called for offsides.
"It was the first time we made it past round one of the playoffs," Wai'anae junior Janee Lee said of her soccer career. "It was a really big game."
Lee scored three minutes into the game after her teammate and the Radford goalkeeper collided on the left side of the 18-yard box. But the ball was sent through to the center of the box to a wide-open Lee, who put it away.
Lee added her second goal in the 13th minute after the ball was sent forward and she beat two defenders to make it 2-0.
Radford's Rahjita Sampson scored in the 17th minute to make it 2-1.
The Seariders went ahead 3-1 in the 25th minute when Kaylynn Ichinose knocked in a goal from the top left corner of the box. Five minutes later, Natasha Nagum scored to make it 4-1.
Radford changed goalkeepers in the 31st minute, then went with a third goalkeeper in the 34th.
The Rams started to press forward in the second half and cut the deficit to 4-2 in the 46th minute when the ball was sent into the box and Samantha Canty and Sampson both converged on it. Both undefended, Canty scored from about 10 yards out.
"The jitterbugs started to come out and we were not taking the ball out of the back like we do," Wai'anae coach Courtney Brant said. "We sorta calmed down instead of pushing forward."
The Rams will face West No. 2 Nanakuli (4-3-4) in today's third-place game with the winner earning the league's third and final state berth.
"We really have to forget about the loss and push for it," Pacpaco said.
KAILUA 2, NANAKULI 1
Tiffany Pereza scored the go-ahead goal in the 39th minute to help the host Surfriders advance.
Tiffany Nakata scored in the 20th minute to give Kailua a 1-0 lead. Chasytie Morgan's corner kick from the left corner that arched into the top right corner of the goal tied it in the 29th.
Kailua goalkeeper Lauren Merritt stopped both of Nanakuli's scoring opportunities in the second half. She leaped up in front of the goal to stop a shot from about 40 yards out in the 71st, then stopped a shot from about 30 yards out in the 79th.
