KĪLAUEA, Kaua'i — After negotiating for more than three hours with a man who had barricaded himself in his Kīlauea residence, Kaua'i police officers placed the man in protective custody at about 7:30 pm. tonight.

He was taken to Samuel Mahelona emergency room in Kapa'a to undergo examination and evaluation.

Police are investigating potential charges of arson and reckless endangering against the man, who has not been identified.
