Kalaheo senior Shawn Reed has made a verbal commitment to play football for the United States Naval Academy.

Reed, a 6-foot-1, 212-pound linebacker, visited the Navy campus in Annapolis, Md., last weekend and gave head coach Ken Niumatalolo — a former Radford standout — his verbal commitment Sunday.

"Once I saw the atmosphere there, I really liked it," said Reed, who will be joining former Kalaheo teammate Bruce Andrews at Navy.

Reed also was being recruited by Army, Washington, Washington State and Oregon State. Hawai'i offered him "preferred walk-on" status.

Reed made 112 tackles (including 3 1/2 sacks) this past season, forcing four fumbles and recovering three. He has run the 40-yard dash in 4.66 seconds and his vertical jump has been measured at 36 inches.

Reed also carries a 3.6 grade point average.

"Navy really scored; Shawn has everything you want in a football player," Kalaheo coach Chris Mellor said. "He's fast, hits hard and he brings it on every play. And he's a very respectful person, a really good guy."
