Don't look now, but here comes Kaimuki again making another late season run in O'ahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball.

The Bulldogs won their fifth straight OIA Red Conference Eastern Division game last night, speeding past visiting Kalaheo 57-43. Kaimuki, ranked No. 5 in The Advertiser's statewide Top 10 poll of coaches and media, is 5-2 heading into tomorrow's showdown at No. 2 Kahuku (8-0).

No. 6 Kalaheo fell to 4-3.

"This is the first time in a long time we've beaten Kalaheo," said Bulldogs junior post Desmond Tautofi, who finished with 14 points, nine rebounds, two assists and one block after sitting out the first period for disciplinary reasons. "I wanted to make a difference."

Tautofi, an athletic 6-foot-3, 260-pound junior, got into foul trouble early in the second half of Kaimuki's 66-60 loss to Kalaheo three weeks ago. But last night, he had a steady impact over the final three periods, in which the Bulldogs outscored the Mustangs 44-30.

He scored Kaimuki's first four points of the second quarter to put the Bulldogs up for good at 17-16, then scored four more points, grabbed three rebounds and had two assists as they stretched the lead to 29-20 by halftime.

"We had a hard time with Tautofi," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "But we also gave away too much penetration."

With starting point guard David Taulung on the Kaimuki bench for much of the first half with two fouls, shooting guard Ryan Kakitani was able to score on several driving layups and picked up the slack with eight points by intermission.

In the third period, Taulung buried two 3-pointers to help build the lead to 43-24 entering the fourth.

Defensively, Kaimuki held the high-scoring Mustangs duo of Aaron Fernandez and Matt Gasparine to a combined eight points through the first three periods. They had scored 29 and 23 points, respectively, in the victory over the Bulldogs three weeks ago.

Gasparine had 12 rebounds in that game, but was not much of a factor on the boards last night.

"We made it a point to block him out," Kaimuki coach Kelly Grant said. "He killed us last time."

Kalaheo managed to cut the lead to 46-37 after two free throws by Fernandez with 3:19 remaining, but Jason Nutter contributed four free throws down the stretch to help the Bulldogs stave off any further comeback attempt.

Kakitani and Taulung each added 13 points for Kaimuki. Christian Kepa led Kalaheo with 13 points, and Fernandez and Richard Preza-Haynes each added 12 for the Mustangs.
