A high priority for June W.J. Ching this year is to "grow" her friendships.
With the chaos that often comes with everyday life — at home, school or work — it's easy to take friendships for granted, said Ching, a clinical psychologist and former president of the Hawaii Psychological Association.
"Using the metaphor of a garden, friendships can be neglected if not maintained and watered," she said. "With a little attention, upkeep and care, the friendships can thrive, get even better, stronger and more satisfying."
Ryan Hong, a junior at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa, typically immerses himself in school work, so he appreciates the free time he does have with his friends.
The Downtown Honolulu resident, 22, enjoys doing different things with different circles. Whether it's hiking, clubbing or just hanging out at someone's house, he always considers it quality time.
"By spending time with your friends, you build memories and you strengthen those relationships you have," Hong said.
