'AIEA — Turning on the jets offensively and slowing down 'Aiea's top scoring threat on defense, Mililani blitzed past Na Ali'i, 68-46, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association girls basketball action.

With the victory, the Trojans moved into a tie for first place in the OIA Red Conference Western Division; both teams are now 7-2.

Mililani jumped to a 9-2 lead, held off an 'Aiea run that closed it to 9-8, then outscored Na Ali'i 23-12 in the second period and led 34-20 at halftime. The Trojans stretched the lead to 49-30 after three quarters, and did not allow 'Aiea to get any closer in the fourth.

"It's a very big win for us," said Mililani senior guard Sophie Chang, who finished with 16 points — all in the first three periods. "We wanted to play our game and utilize our speed."

The Trojans opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run built on four transition layups. They opened the lead to 24-12 midway through the period on a 3-pointer by Chang, her third of the half.

After Na Ali'i cut it to 30-20 on a short jumper by Crystal Tagudin with 48 seconds remaining, Mililani answered with Darcey Goulsby's two free throws and then Chang's steal and fast break layup three seconds before the halftime buzzer.

"We weren't ready to play," 'Aiea coach Mike Yen said. "We talked about their transition game, we knew we had to try to stop that. But we didn't come out as a team."

The trend continued into the third period, as five of the Trojans' six field goals came on layups. The sixth was Chang's 3-pointer, which put the Trojans up, 49-30, with nine seconds left.

Meanwhile, Mililani held 'Aiea senior guard Natasha Helsham to two points through the first three quarters, and she finished with only six points. In a 43-41 victory over Pearl City on Tuesday, Helsham scored 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds, dished out seven assists, made eight steals and had two blocks.

The Trojans played a straight man-to-man defense on Helsham in the first half, then went with a box-and-one in the second half with Abby McKoy shadowing her.

"We talked about stopping her drives and trying to frustrate her," said Chang.

Mililani's execution on offense and defense, especially in the final three periods, was a pleasant surprise to Trojans coach Pat Basilio.

"Aiea always seems to come back on us," Basilio said. "I never thought we'd win by 20."

Mililani guard Chelsea Basilio led all scorers with 21 points, and post Darcey Goulsby added 13 points. Carol Sio led Na Ali'i with 16 points.
