TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida State has vaulted to the top spot of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The outside shooting of Seminole senior guards Tanae Davis-Cain and Mara Freshour brought down No. 3 Duke, 82-75, in overtime last night to give No. 18 Florida State sole possession of first in the ACC for the first time since joining the league in the 1991-1992 season.
Freshour scored a season-high 21 points, including a 3-pointer that tied the score at 68 to send the game into overtime. Davis-Cain and junior center Jacinta Monroe added 17 points each.
"Their backcourt was absolutely a dominant force," Duke coach Joanne McCallie said. "We put 75 points on the board. That's enough. That's plenty. Of course they had something to say with their 82."
The 82 points were nearly 30 more than the Blue Devils (17-2, 5-1 ) have given up on average this year.
"Wow," was Florida State coach Sue Semrau's response to her team's highest scoring total in ACC play this season. "That says a lot. Their defense is tremendous."
The Seminoles (18-4, 6-0) haven't lost since an 83-71 defeat to No. 1 UConn in a Christmas tournament in Cancun, Mexico.
GEORGIA 67, NO. 5 AUBURN 58
Angel Robinson scored 17 points and Christy Marshall added 15 to help the host Bulldogs (14-7, 4-2 Southeastern Conference), who beat then-No. 17 Vanderbilt last week, hand the Tigers (20-1, 5-1) their first loss of the season.
NO. 10 NORTH CAROLINA 77, WAKE FOREST 66
Italee Lucas scored 27 points and Rashanda McCants added 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the host Tar Heels (18-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) over the Demon Deacons (13-5, 1-4) to snap a three-game losing streak.
