Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou arrives in Honolulu today for an overnight stopover on his way home from Central America. Before leaving tomorrow night, he will meet with Gov. Linda Lingle at a private breakfast, attend a reception in his honor and possibly be confronted by protesters.
Officials did not disclose what time Ma is scheduled to arrive and depart Honolulu. He will stay at the Kahala Hotel & Resort.
Lingle will greet the president at his arrival today at the Honolulu International Airport and will have breakfast with Ma tomorrow. She will also attend a reception for him tomorrow hosted by the Overseas Chinese in Hawai'i before Ma departs later that evening. Lingle last met Ma in 2003 when he was the mayor of Taipei.
Ma is on his way back to Taiwan after visits to Panama — where he attending the swearing-in ceremony of newly elected President Ricardo Martinelli — Honduras and Nicaragua.
Honolulu police advise motorists to be prepared for delays and road closures as Ma travels, but times of travel were not disclosed.
Members of the Formosan Association for Public Affairs-Hawaii Chapter are planning to stage protests near the hotel and the East-West Center to bring attention to Ma's human rights policies, said Dr. Chao Chen, president of the Hawai'i chapter. The group says Ma uses Taiwan's judicial system to suppress opponents and the news media.
The Formosan group was established in 1982 in Los Angeles and has headquarters in Washington, D.C.
