Hawaii students enjoy extended stay in South Korea after quarantine

Twenty-one students and four chaperones visiting South Korea as part of an educational program sponsored by the Pacific and Asian Affairs Council are making up for lost time after being quarantined at the start of their stay.

The party was put in quarantine after five of the students showed elevated temperatures and were later confirmed to have the H1N1 virus. In all, 11 of the 25 people on the trip were found to have swine flu.
PAAC extended the group's visit until July 7, allowing the students to participate in several activities that would otherwise have been missed. So far, the students have toured Seoul, visited the Blue House (South Korea's presidential palace) and met with e-mail pen pals from a Seoul high school.
"We are pleased that we were able to recoup significant portions of this trip by extending the return date," said Ruth Limtiaco, PAAC board member and spokesperson. "The learning experiences that these students have are an unparalleled opportunity to learn about another country's history and culture, and it culminates the teaching that PAAC's programs offer in the classroom."
Yesterday, the students were scheduled to attend a Fourth of July celebration at the USO, where they will perform a hula.
