Sam Cyr of Makawao, Maui, defeated Carl Smith IV of Laguna Beach, Calif., 2 and 1, in the round of 64 at yesterday's match play of the Pacific Northwest Golf Association Men's Amateur Championship in Dupont, Wash.
Cyr, seeded third, will face No. 30 David Fern of Spokane, Wash., today. The winner will advance to the round of 16s later in the afternoon.
Cyr, a King Kekaulike graduate who won his second straight NAIA national championship at Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.) in May, was all square with No. 62 Smith through the first four holes. Cyr went one up on the fifth hole and never trailed thereafter. He was 4 up after the 13th hole.
FITNESS CHALLENGES
BRIDGESTONE WILL MATCH BALL TO SWING
Bridgestone Golf will be doing its first series of golf ball Fitting Challenges in Hawai'i next month. The events, which are free and similar to club fitting, have become popular on the Mainland.
Golfers hit with their own clubs and tell a member of the Bridgestone technical staff what ball they usually use. Their swing is followed by a camera and swing speed monitor that registers launch angle, club and ball speed and spin rate. The technician then recommends a Bridgestone ball that should go farther and straighter.
According to Bridgestone, after more than 20,000 fittings, 70 percent increased their driving distance by an average of 12 yards.
