Kamehameha teachers on Hilo awaiting union vote outcome

Associated Press

HILO, Hawaii — High school teachers at Kamehameha Schools Hawaii on the Big Island are waiting to find out if they will be presented by a union.

They took a vote in May, but the tally was delayed because the school filed an appeal.
The National Labor Relations Board on Tuesday denied Kamehameha’s request for review, ruling the high school was a discrete unit capable of forming its own union.
Kamehameha Schools spokesman Kekoa Paulsen says a hearings officer made a mistake when he allowed the high school faculty to be treated separately from middle and elementary school faculty.
If the union vote passes, the high school faculty would be represented by the Kamehameha Schools Faculty Association. It’s the union that represents faculty at the main campus on Oahu.
