Alfa Romeo smashed the elapsed time record for monohulls by a day in the Transpacific Yacht Race when it crossed the finish line off Diamond Head this morning.
Neville Crichton’s Reichel Pugh 100, with a crew of 16, completed the 2,225-nautical mile crossing in 5 days, 14 hours, 36 minutes and 20 seconds, beating the record set by Hasso Plattner’s Morning Glory in 2005 of 6:16:04:11.
Alfa Romeo crossed the finish line at 12:36:20 a.m. The result is subject to official verification.
The remaining 46 boats are vying for elapsed time and corrected time honors.
Crichton, a former Hawai‘i resident, sailed his first and only other Transpacific Yacht Race 30 years ago.
Crichton and his fleet of Alfa Romeo sailboats have taken line honors in 171 races.
The race started off Point Fermin at the southern edge of Los Angeles.
