Pablo Sandoval has been bypassed three times for a spot on the National League All-Star team, but there’s still a chance the third baseman will end up in St. Louis for the game Tuesday.
N.L. Manager Charlie Manuel of Philadelphia made what figured to be his final roster adjustments Sunday (including replacing injured Giants pitcher Matt Cain). But Giants Manager Bruce Bochy said he was told by Manuel on Saturday night that a last-minute injury could open a spot for Sandoval.
“He said if something happens he’s got Pablo in mind,” Bochy said.
Sandoval said he would not turn down the opportunity, but he said he’ll be happy just spending a few days sightseeing in San Francisco with his wife and parents.
“I’m just going to relax with my family,” Sandoval said.
Even if his All-Star ticket goes unpunched, Sandoval produced a first half Giants fans haven’t seen since Barry Bonds was around.
Sandoval’s .333 average is fourth in the N.L, he’s seventh in OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage), and his 15 home runs are the most by a Giant before the All-Star break since Bonds clubbed 17 in 2007.
—Kevin Frandsen and Fred Lewis got confidence-boosting at-bats heading into the break in the ninth inning against San Diego Padres closer Heath Bell, who has been one of the most dominant relievers in the league.
Frandsen, who had been 2 for 33 (.061), led off the ninth with a single, and then scored on Lewis’ two-out double to left. Lewis had just seven hits in his previous 48 at-bats (.146).
—Randy Winn had a first-inning single, giving him a hit in 13 of his past 14 games. He’s batting .339 (20 for 59) during the stretch.
—Attendance for the series finale was 41,913, the ninth sellout of the season.
—Neither of the Giants’ representatives at the Futures Game got into the game in St. Louis on Sunday. San Jose Giants first baseman Angel Villalona missed the game because of an ankle injury, and left-hander Madison Bumgarner, the top-rated prospect in the Giants’ minor league system, saw his appearance washed out. Bumgarner, who opened the season with San Jose, was warming up to pitch the second inning before a four-hour rain delay.
