People.com reports Debbie Rowe, the ex-wife of Michael Jackson and biological mother of two of his three children, who has kept a low profile since the singer's death on June 25, will attend a July 20 hearing in Los Angeles on the temporary guardianship of the children.
Rowe "says that she will definitely be at the custody hearing," Marc Schaffel, a former business partner of Jackson's and a close friend of Rowe's, told People.
Rowe's children — Prince Michael, 12, and Paris, 11 — have been staying with their grandmother, Katherine Jackson, since the singer's death. Prince Michael II, 7, Jackson's youngest child, was born from an unidentified surrogate. Katherine Jackson was named guardian in the singer's will and is petitioning the court to keep the children with her.
LATOYA THINKS BROTHER WAS MURDERED
LONDON — Two British tabloids quote LaToya Jackson as saying she believes her brother, Michael Jackson, was murdered as part of a conspiracy to steal his fortune.
She reportedly says her brother's assets of more than $1 billion made him a tempting target and that cash and jewelry worth roughly $2 million were taken from his home after his death.
Her comments were published yesterday. The News of the World quotes her as saying she knows who is to blame for her brother's death and is determined to see them brought to justice.
NEW YORK ORCHESTRA MAY PLAY CUBA
HAVANA — Prospects for Cuban performances by the New York Philharmonic look promising following a tour of concert halls and meetings with music officials on the island, orchestra president Zarin Mehta said yesterday.
Mehta said a final decision will be made by the Philharmonic's board of directors. Eric Latzky, the orchestra's vice president for communications, said an official announcement could be as much as a month off.
But Mehta said the trip looks promising, with tentative plans for performances on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at the 900-seat Teatro Amadeo Roldan, a renovated concert hall a few blocks from the Malecon coastal highway.
The island's Culture Ministry invited the orchestra to perform in Havana, and U.S. officials have agreed to allow the musicians to visit under an exemption to legal restrictions on travel to Cuba, Latzky said.
'BRUNO' CAPTURES NO. 1 SPOT FOR WEEKEND
LOS ANGELES — Gay Austrian fashion devotee Bruno has landed the No. 1 spot at the weekend box office, though it's uncertain how much staying power he has.
Sacha Baron Cohen's "Bruno" started big on opening day Friday but had a huge drop the rest of the weekend, with the Universal Pictures mock documentary finishing with $30.4 million, according to studio estimates yesterday. Revenues for hit movies typically go up on Saturday, so the nosedive for "Bruno" could be a sign that it lacks the shelf life that made Baron Cohen's "Borat" a $100 million smash.
