Henry T. Takitani was Maui legislator

Former Maui state Sen. Henry T. Takitani died July 6 in Wailuku. He was 85.
Takitani was born in 'Ele'ele, Kaua'i, and served in the Army with Company K of the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry.
He was elected to the state House of Representatives in 1968 and in 1970 gained one of Maui's two seats in the state Senate. In 1979, he ran for Maui County mayor following the resignation of Mayor Elmer Cravalho and finished fifth in a race won by Hannibal Tavares, father of current Maui Mayor Charmaine Tavares.
Takitani is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Sheila Kawahara, Cheryl Takitani-Smith and Roxanne Teshima; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation at noon Sunday at Ballard Family Mortuary in Kahului, Maui; service at 2 p.m.
