$10,000 reward offered for conviction in horse shootings
The Kaua'i Humane Society is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever shot two horses in a Kapaia pasture.
A retired rope horse named Earl was killed, and Buddy, a 5-year-old quarterhorse, survived a bullet wound to the face. They were found Thursday morning.
According to Kaua'i Humane Society Executive Director Rebecca Rhoades, police believe the horses were shot with a high-powered rifle.
Owner Andrea Ellsworth said she has no idea who fired the shots. She said she thinks the violence was random, not personal.
It was Kaua'i's third fatal shooting of an animal in recent months. In April, a Hawaiian monk seal was found dead at Kaumakani. The next month, another monk seal was discovered dead at Pila'a beach.
