The city’s Ocean Safety and Lifeguard Services Division has issued an advisory about the possibility of strong rip currents and tidal surges at Oahu beaches resulting from last night’s earthquake off New Zealand.

The National Weather Service has canceled the tsunami warning for Hawaii but some possible sea level changes and unusual currents are expected to affect the Islands beginning at approximately 11 a.m. and lasting into the early afternoon hours.
“Ocean Safety personnel would like to remind beachgoers to please check with them before entering the water today,” Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said in a statement. “Especially at certain locations such as Waimea Bay, Pokai Bay and Hanauma Bay where strong currents and riptides are enhanced due to the topography and shape of the shoreline.”
