The Catholic Diocese of Honolulu is moving forward with plans for an acquired building on Fort Street Mall adjacent to the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
The cathedral is using the building at 1159 Fort Street Mall, acquired in 2007, as a parish gathering space.
"For the life of the parish, I think we really need a parish hall," said cathedral rector, the Rev. John Berger, in The Hawaii Catholic Herald. "There won't be another chance," he said, noting that Hawai'i Pacific University leases most of the surrounding buildings, which rarely come up for sale.
The diocese has also purchased two more properties: the old Catholic Charities Hawaii's Vineyard Street office, and a $1.1 million purchase of two lots next to Blessed Sacrament Parish in Pauoa Valley.
The former is slated, for now, to become income-producing leased parking.
"That's a big dream that we'd like to consolidate all of our major diocesan offices," vicar general, the Rev. Marc Alexander, said in the Catholic newspaper. "We know that we need to acquire the property now, while it's available.
